IP Mesh Radio Update – January 2022

As you know, we have been very successful with our development of the PTT hand-held IP Mesh Mesh radio, the world’s smallest, truly hand-held radio using COFDM Mesh technology.

MIMO Antennae

Mesh radios / nodes have at least two antennae. When in Transmit mode, only one of the antennae is in use. When in Receive mode, both antennae are used as the receiver is a dual-diversity receiver.

Frequency Hopping & Intelligent Anti-Jamming

Over the past year, we have implemented a number of new developments, including full Military grade Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), at 1250 hops per second, this in addition to our own Intelligent Anti-Jamming (IAJ) proprietary interference mitigation.

Single Side Band Modulation (SSBM)

We have delivered the world’s narrowest Mesh waveform, at 300KHz, with a capacity of 150kbps, this is aimed directly at voice/audio and low data transmission, but the upside is incredible range and penetration performance. This waveform, called Single Side Band Modulation or SSBM, sits alongside the wideband COFDM waveform on the same FPGA, allowing users to dynamically select waveforms depending upon their operating environment.

Large Network (LN)

Another significant milestone is the delivery of our first Large Network (LN) with 64 radios in a single frequency mesh. With the advent of drone swarming, there is increasing demand for larger numbers of IP Mesh Nodes/radios to be operated in a single frequency Mesh. Most of our competitors are forced to move to a collision-based network algorithm when they operate large numbers of Nodes/radios in a single Mesh, with the resulting consequential loss of Quality of Service (QoS). Our LN implementation maintains the COFDM Token Passing algorithm, ensuring QoS with large Networks.

We have embarked on development of a VLN (Very Large Network) with >200 Nodes/radios in a single frequency Mesh, while still maintaining our tried and tested COFDM Token Passing network algorithm, a world first. More announcements will come early in H2 on this development.

MIMO Implementation

Our new MIMO antenna development is now ready to be delivered. Development is complete and customer trials have been successful. We will officially launch it at Milipol Asia in May but it can be ordered and delivered now. This, as with all of the developments above, is a software licence upgrade, and it will increase network throughput from 28mbps @ 10MHz bandwidth to 72mbps @ 10MHz bandwidth, and from 56mbps @ 20MHz to 120mbps @ 20MHz bandwidth, with no hardware changes required.

It is generally recognized that the implementation of MIMO will double the network capacity. However, as you can see, the new MIMO throughput is more than doubling the current capacity. How is this possible? Previously our maximum modulation scheme was 256-QAM. We have now implemented 1024-QAM in conjunction with our MIMO release, effectively increasing throughput by a factor of almost 2.5!!!

New S-Mesh Variant for First Responders

We are also pleased to announce a new variant of the IP Mesh traditional radio offering. Targeted principally at First Responders, and users needing very long battery life on a body worn radio, it is focused on users who need to continue operating cellular mobile devices, Harris and/or Motorola Wi Fi enabled radios, or any Wi Fi enabled DMR radio, in a cellular denied/ compromised environment.

The S-MESH-CAP (Communications Access Point) is a 12-hour battery mission life, in a rugged IP67 housing, with integrated Wi Fi access point, Bluetooth and GPS, topped off with an integrated carabiner to clip the radio anywhere convenient, to create a PLN (Personal Local Network) for up to 90 metres Wi Fi radius around the radio.

Tested extensively in Australia and the USA, by Fire & Rescue services, in tunnels, basements, underground car parks, collapsed buildings, deep valleys, below decks on ships, the S-MESH-CAP has proven its ability to extend coverage beyond the current edge of connectivity.

Fire fighters can continue to use their existing cellular mobile apps, Law Enforcement and Military users can continue to use their CIVTAK and ATAK situational awareness apps, in environments where there is no cellular coverage.

Using the incredible range of our IP Mesh technology, any S-MESH radio that is connected to a cellular modem, such as a Cradle Point, can also provide external network connectivity for technology that needs to be “always connected” to ensure officer safety, such as the Wearin Tech body worn sensors.

We are pleased to provide some initial marketing information on the new product, including the S-MESH-MAP (Mobile Access Point), which is the same solution but in a very sleek IP66 housing, using external power, high gain antennae and intended for installation in vehicles, buildings and other semi-fixed or fixed sites.

Initially available in L band (1000-1500MHz), S band (200-2500MHz) and C band (4500-5000Mhz), pricing for the new products will be released in the latest version of the Price List, due before the end of January.
